Oreo Moon Lesson

Great Science Lesson!


Topic: Oreo Phases.
L.O.: SWBAT understand the moon phases by identifying the phases and creating a diagram.
Standard: 1.1.G
Do Now:
Labels will not be included.
Do now will be to label the various phases of the moon.


I DO;
Activating prior knowledge:
- showing youtube clip about the phases of the moon, refreshing prior knowledge (have
students self correct their do now)

- Show video twice.

- stop at the “quarters” point - CJ will emphasize the first quarter vs. half.
WE DO
(put them in order from New moon → Waning Crescent); COLD CALL
New Moon → Waxing Crescent → First Quarter → Waxing Gibbous →
Full Moon → Waning Gibbous → Last Quarter → Waning Crescent

YOU DO: LAB ACTIVITY - OREO PHASES.
OREO PHASES INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Label your worksheet, "Oreo Phases"
2. Label all phases starting with "new moon" ending with "waning crescent"
3. Split the Oreo and put the half with the frosting on each moon phase.
4. Use the toothpick to change the frosting on the Oreo to demonstrate what the moon looks
like at that phase
**MODEL HOW TO SPLIT THE OREO AND HOW TO SCRAPE OFF THE FROSTING**
5. Once your group is done with all 8 phases, take a pic, text it in!
